Le Bon Marché Inaugurates Sangam, Subodh Gupta’s New Monumental Exhibition

The legendary atrium of Le Bon Marché is anything but common. But it was even more extraordinary this Tuesday evening for the inauguration of Subodh Gupta’s monumental installation as this season’s exhibition. The renown Indian artist was given carte blanche to take over the Saint-Germain headquarters, and once again demonstrated his great talent with the exhibition entitled Sangram.

Preluding the kick-off of Paris Fashion Week, the opening began with a runway show, which took place along the famous monumental escalators in the centre of the atrium. Perhaps evoking the cogs and wheels of a production line, the ascent of the stairs might have been a subtle reminder of the artist’s reflection on consumerism in our contemporary societies. It took only a few seconds for visitors- watching from the balconies-  to marvel at the parade of mannequins, whose headpieces echoed Gupta’s masterpiece. The evening continued with a ballet performance by dancer and choreographer Angelin Preljocaj.
