“La prose du monde”, A Retrospective of Jean Hélion’s Work at the MAM
His name may not be the first coming to mind when we think of abstract painters, yet Jean Hélion was a pioneer of this artistic movement. To bring to light his lesser-known work and its international significance, the MAM presents the exhibition “La prose du monde”. This retrospective explores the evolution of the French painter and intellectual, deceased in 1987, through over 150 works displayed chronologically. Paintings, drawings, notebooks and documents reflect not only Jean Hélion’s artistic practice but also some of his life experiences and thoughts on the times he lived in, including his experience of war.
At the opening evening, held on Wednesday 20th, we met the exhibition’s curator, Sophie Krebs, and guest curator, Henry-Claude Cousseau, as well as several members of the Comité Jean Hélion, including Jacqueline Hélion, Philippe Dagen and Mark Vail.
