The Fondation Louis Vuitton Exhibits the Work of Mark Rothko, The Explorer of the Human Soul
Twenty-four years after the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, the Fondation Louis Vuitton pays tribute to Mark Rothko through an exhibition featuring around 115 works.
Thanks to the emotional intensity and intriguing palette of his canvases, the American artist remains an emblematic figure of the 20th-century Abstract Expressionist movement. His monumental paintings, imbued with vibrant colours and a striking spiritual depth, transcend the limits of the canvas and capture the very essence of the human experience.
The exhibition explores the painter in a meticulously chronological and intimately staged approach, tracing his entire career: from his earliest figurative paintings to the abstract works that he is most known for today. Keeping in line with Rothko’s wish to imbue space with eloquence and intensity, the Foundation – the work of architect Frank Gehry – becomes the perfect setting for this immersive experience. The artist’s son, Christopher Rothko, was invited to unveil the exhibition alongside its curator Suzanne Pagé.
The opening was held on Tuesday 17 October, bringing together leading figures from the art scene, including Fabrice Hyber, Denise Campbell Bauer, Jean-Paul Claverie, Françoise Dumas, Max Richter and Jean-Marie Rouart.
