FREE JAZZ, Henri Matisse and… The Latest Exhibition of The Drawing Lab
The Drawing Lab is paying tribute to Matisse through a new interpretation of his book Jazz by eight contemporary artists: Etel Adnan, Agnès Thurnauer, Pierre Charpin, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Isabelle Ferreira, Claire Trotignon, Alexandre Benjamin Navet, and Tania Mouraud.
Each specialising in different fields (including visual arts, design and fashion), they have all created unique pieces inspired by what Matisse’s work evokes for them. Whether explicit or subtle, an affinity between their practices is omnipresent, revealing that Matisse’s gesture—that distinct cutting of paper, that drawn script—continues to resonate and inspire us today.
Running until September 30th, the exhibition is an ode to creative freedom, bringing together pieces that, while inspired by a common ideal, remain distinctive.
At the exhibition opening, we had the pleasure of meeting some of the exhibiting artists, as well as figures from the art scene, including Jean-Matthieu Matisse, Xavier Rey, Claire Bernardi, Pierre Lungheretti, Jérôme Sans, Jean-Marc Dimanche, Laurence Maynier and Marc Donnadieu.
