For David Catalán, Fashion is All About Assembly
One of the few Portuguese fashion brands participating in Milan Fashion Week, David Catalán unveiled a collection based on the concept of functional fashion, with garments that interact with each other to create a complete winter wardrobe. Assembled is the name of the collection and its philosophy: «For this collection, the focus was on how garments overlap and match for winter. Nothing forced, just a focus on wearability and quality», explains the designer. The Fondazione Sozzani thus staged a triumph of patchwork, taking inspiration from workwear and repair techniques to reinforce and give structure to the garments. Outerwear takes centre stage, with panelled cuts, irregular compositions, and deliberate overlays. Leather and velvet inserts fit perfectly on denim jackets and trousers; strips of colour give life to an unusual double-breasted suit; leather details enrich the revers and pockets of a suede blazer. The warmth of wool, cashmere, and velvet contrasts with the roughness of denim and leather, giving life to a successful reinterpretation of the formal men’s suit. Jackets, trousers, shirts, and even ties are reimagined in an all-leather composition or in dark denim with a pre-loved effect, for a contemporary take on classic elegance. David Catalán’s palette remains deliberately understated, ranging from browns, camel, dark olive, and earthy neutrals, confirming once again the idea of assembly and interchangeability, of a wardrobe designed around versatile garments that want to be mixed and matched in the most creative way possible.
