‘The Magical Object’: Ettore Sottsass in the spotlight at the Centre Pompidou

From October 13 to January 3, 2022, the Centre Pompidou puts Ettore Sottsass under the spotlight with a major exhibition. ‘The Magical Object’ offers a chronological immersion into the avant-garde work of the Italian designer known for his global approach to design. Spanning four decades, from the 1940s (‘spatial constructions’ and ‘architectural objects’) to the 1980s (during which he founded the famous Memphis group), the exhibition shows the full extent of his creative approach to design. ‘The Magical Object’ also focuses on his work with ceramics, which began in the mid-1950s and culminated in an exhibition at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm in 1969. This particular exhibition became historic for the monumental pieces Sottsass had shown, which have become a symbol of ‘magical design’. The exhibition was partly recreated within the Centre Pompidou installation. ‘The Magical Object’ brings together an impressive number of works: more than four hundred drawings, paintings and design objects, as well as nearly five hundred photographic works…
