“Encores”: art in music at the Venice Biennale

A very special concert indeed: artgenève collaborated with Artcurial and John Taylor as part of the 58th edition of the Venice Biennale. At Teatro Goldoni, in the city’s historic center, Augustin Maurs invited contemporary artists to interpret the encore: this “concert after the concert” that can be more intimate, more extravagant or more subversive. The third edition—previously held at the Berlin Philharmonic in 2013 and at the Herkulessaal in Munich in 2017—yielded “ENCORES: music on recurrence, redundancy and surplus.” It brought onstage artists Saâdane Afif, Hsia-Fei Chang, Pierre Huyghe, Yutaka Makino, Jonathan Monk, Annika Larsson and Anri Sala. While the Biennale’s focus is usually on the inauguration of the Pavilions (notably the French Pavilion by Laure Prouvost), the concert (supported L’Officiel Art, the Valmont Foundation, Ruinart, Zuecca project space, Tag Aviation and Teatro Veneto) was worth noting. Afterwards, everyone gathered for dinner at Palazzo Bauer, one of the most beautiful settings in Venice.
