“Couturissime”: The legend of Thierry Mugler dazzles at Musée des Arts Décoratifs
After its huge success at Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the ‘Thierry Mugler, Couturissime’ exhibition has finally arrived in Paris – and at the right time! While Fashion Week is already well underway, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs hosted on September 28th the most-awaited event of the week, and it was packed with anybody who’s anybody. Starting with no one other than Cardi B who in 2019 had caused a sensation on the red carpet of the Grammy Awards in a dress from the Fall/Winter 1995-1996 haute couture collection. This time around, she made a remarkable entrance in a feathered dress from the ‘Le Cirque d’hiver’ Fall/Winter 1994-1995 collection, crossing the crowd where we could see Alessandra Ambrosio, Coco Rocha, Anna Cleveland, Raya Martigny or Miss Fame. Inside the museum, ‘Couturissime’ offers a detailed retrospective of Thierry Mugler’s greatest career moments, over no less than four decades. From his “Insectes” and “Chimères” collections to the legendary Angel fragrance, the exhibition gives us a glimpse of the French couturier’s genius. A genius that transcends labels: the exhibition also dedicates a chapter to his collaboration with Helmut Newton and his own experimentations as a photographer. It also offers to rediscover his costumes made for the Comédie-Française in 1985 (the story goes that Mr. Mugler had the largest budget given by the Comédie-Française since its creation in 1680 for this project…). Not to forget the video of “Too Funky” showing Linda Evangelista and Emma Sjöberg dressed in some of his most legendary designs…
