Fondation Cartier celebrates the work of Claudia Andujar
From January 30th to May 10th, 2020, Fondation Cartier honors Brazilian photographer and activist Claudia Andujar. With the exhibition “Claudia Andujar, La Lutte Yanomami”, the institution on the Boulevard Raspail presents the largest exhibition ever devoted to this artist, whose work represents the struggle of a lifetime in defense of the Yanomami, the Amerindian people of the Brazilian Amazon. The exhibition brings together more than three hundred photographs from Claudia Andujar’s archives – the work of several years of research by Thyago Nogueira, curator of the exhibition and director of the Department of Contemporary Photography at the Instituto Moreira Salles, Brazil. Among these photographs, most of which are unpublished, the exhibition unveils a visual installation as well as drawings by Yanomami artists. The photographer’s encounter with the Yanomami people dates back to 1971, when she did a report on the Amazon for Realidade magazine. Since then, Claudia Andujar has dedicated her life and work to defending the rights of the Yanomami people, notably by fighting for the protection of their territory. The exhibition presented at the Fondation Cartier retraces the artist’s activism with a complex show whose aesthetics blend with a powerful political commitment. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Instituto Moreira Salles (Brazil) and is supported by the Yanomami Hutukara Association (Boa Vista) and the Instituto Socioambiental (São Paulo and Boa Vista). As part of the partnership between the Cartier Foundation and the Triennale Milano, Claudia Andujar, La Lutte Yanomami will be presented in Milan from October 2020. The exhibition will also travel to the Fotomuseum Winterthur (Switzerland) on June 6th, 2020 and to the Mapfre Foundation (Spain) on February 11th, 2021.
