The Centre Pompidou Unveils “Paris Noir”, its Second-to-Last Exhibition Before its Closure

Centre Pompidou, Paris

The Centre Pompidou may have already begun its transformation, yet the museum’s complete closure is still a long way off, and its programme is still very much on the agenda. The exhibition “Paris noir”, which runs in gallery 1, level 6, from March 19th to June 30th, is a fine example of this. Curated by Alicia Knock, the show gives a fresh look at Paris during the second half of the 20th century. This new perspective provides black artists with the visibility that traditional narratives denied them at the time, rewriting a Pan-African and transnational history of art. “Paris noir” features the works of 150 African, Afro-American and Caribbean artists, uncovering their abundant creativity and the influence of their artistic experiments in the development of the modernist and post-modernist movements.

During the preview, held on Tuesday, March 18th, we met French Minister for Culture and Communication Rachida Dati, Aïssa Maiga, Lilian Thuram, Claudia Tagbo, Chassol, Euzhan Palcy, Bernard Hayot, Anne Wachsmann and many other artists whose work was featured in the exhibition…
