Cai Guo-Qiang Sets the Centre Pompidou Alight
Centre Pompidou, Paris
The Chinese artist behind the fireworks display for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Cai Guo-Qiang is a legend in his own right, known for his signature monumental gunpowder drawings. For the closing of the Centre Pompidou, he created a daytime pyrotechnic fresco that lit up the façade of the building. A tribute to the collection and to artistic creation as a whole, this memorable farewell was created using his algorithmic double CAI™ (“AI Cai”), a custom-developed artificial intelligence. Followed by a concert by Rahim Redcar, this send-off was worthy of this cultural landmark. We met Laurent Le Bon, Pedro Winter, Max Hollein, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Emmanuel de Buretel, among others.
