The Berlin-Based Gallery BASTIAN Takes Over the French Capital
Paris is an attractive city for international art galleries. Berlin-based gallery Bastian has just opened a new space in the Marais district, just a stone’s throw from the Picasso Museum. This opening marks a decisive, bold and audacious step for the gallery.
Well-known for representing major figures in modern and contemporary art – from Joseph Beuys to Cy Twombly, not forgetting Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Anselm Kiefer and Damien Hirst – the Bastian gallery is taking an unprecedented turn with their Parisian venture: a new vision more feminine, committed and resolutely contemporary.
To mark this new chapter, Sebastian C. Strenger curated a unique group exhibition featuring the work of 8 women artists. Called “Magnificent Seven +”, the show brings together Valérie Favre, Xenia Hausner, Ingeborg Lüscher, Simone Haack, Lilian Tomasko, Cristina Lucas, Sandra Vásquez de la Horra and Elfie Semotan – all leading figures on the international art scene.
The preview was attended by the artists and numerous personalities from the art world, including gallery founder Aeneas Bastian, Santiago Rumney-Guggenheim (director of the Paris site) and Sebastian C. Strenger. We also met Catherine Millet, Annette Messager, Catherine Grenier, Jean-Philippe Vernes, Isabelle Kowal and Yohann Grandsire. The evening reflected the spirit of this new address: true to its prestigious heritage, but focused on the future, with a resolutely feminine vision.
