Bastian Gallery Pays Tribute to German Artist Simone Haack
From September 4th to 29th, Bastian gallery is bringing Simone Haack’s work to light with a first exhibition in the French capital, introducing an eerie yet fascinating universe. The German artist was born in 1978 and is originally from the village of Gyhum, in the heart of Teufelsmoor, a region whose characteristic landscape fuels her work. After studying with Katharina Grosse and Karin Kneffel in Bremen and at the Beaux-Arts in Paris with Pat Andrea, she now lives in Berlin, where she creates a body of work imbued with memory and dreamlike imagery. Winner of the Willi Oltmanns Prize, Simone Haack creates worlds where the intimate collides with the uncanny.
In Paris, the exhibition subtly explores Michel Foucault’s concept of ‘heterotopia’: halfway between reality and fantasy, familiarity and unease, these spaces resonate in the artist’s paintings and lightboxes. The characters seem to hover, as if on the edge of a dream.
On the evening of the opening, collectors, curators and friends of the gallery gathered to celebrate the event. Among them were Sebastian Strenger, Isabelle Kowal, Anne-Sophie Granjon, Pauline Ducruet, Tyrone Dylan Susman, Annabelle Gugnon and Yumiko Seki.
