All About Love, Mickalene Thomas’s Brilliant Exhibition at the Grand Palais
The Grand Palais is presenting ‘All About Love’, an exhibition dedicated to African-American artist Mickalene Thomas. Covering more than two decades of work (painting, collage, photography, video, installation), this vibrant retrospective explores the visibility and representation of black women, celebrating love as a powerful force for empowerment and emancipation. An internationally renowned artist, Mickalene Thomas reinvents the classic portrait from a queer and black feminist perspective, paying tribute to the autonomy, beauty, and resilience of black women. Often adorned with rhinestones, her compositions reinterpret classic works of art (such as Manet and Ingres) by placing black women at the center of the narrative. Inspired by bell hooks’ book, ‘All About Love: New Visions’, this ambitious Parisian retrospective offers a glimpse into a world of love and self-control, redefining the historical perspective on art. At the opening, we met Sophie Calle, Yancey Richardson, Claude Bonnin, Shuck One, Daphné Bürki.
