Alison Jacques Presents an Other-Worldly Exhibition Curated by Daniel Malarkey
In her London gallery, Alison Jacques opens the exhibition “Last Night I Dreamt of Manderley”, curated by Daniel Malarkey. The title of this group show comes from the opening line of Rebecca, a Gothic novel written in 1938 by Daphne du Maurier, in which an unnamed female narrator goes to live in her new husband’s fictional and idyllic country house, Manderley. However, she gradually starts suspecting that the estate is haunted by the ghost of Rebecca, her husband’s first wife.
Malarkey takes advantage of this eerie and doom-filled atmosphere to introduce a narrative that explores the thin line between the conscious and unconscious. The exhibition explores storytelling as a tool and presents the works of 36 artists, which all challenge the conventional notions of fairytales as children’s stories. Throughout notions of memory, transformation, the supernatural, deception, the complexities of love and more, the show invites us to a fascinating dialogue between artists.
At the opening alongside Alison Jacques and Daniel Malarkey, we met Maggi Hambling, Jean-Marie Appriou and many more.
