Pace Gallery honors Louise Nevelson in Venice
On the second floor of the Procuratie Vecchie in Venice, sculptress Louise Nevelson’s work is brought to life. The exhibition “Louise Nevelson. Persistence”, curated by Julia Bryan-Wilson, professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at Berkeley University, is divided into nine rooms and includes more than sixty works of the legendary sculptress. The exposition covers all the artist’s sculptural phases and also celebrates the 60th anniversary of her participation in the Venice Biennale for the United States Pavilion in 1962. At the heart of the exhibition, iconic large-scale black sculptures in painted wood are presented alongside little-known examples of her important collages, exemplifying Nevelson’s distinctive approach to abstraction and assemblage. To honour the artist’s work, after the official opening event during the Biennale’s pre-opening week, Pace Gallery hosted an intimate cocktail party at Caffè Florian, overlooking Piazza San Marco. An exhibition in the historic halls of Procuratie Vecchie that were closed from the public eye for more than 500 years, not to be missed until September 11.
