Artemide looks to Alexander Calder and launches the Ixa collection, the result of a collaboration with Foster+Partners. Innovative and versatile, Ixa is a family of lamps designed to “shed light,” as they say, on both home and professional spaces, weaving together refined design and functionality. Yet, thanks to the collaboration with Foster+Partners, technology and aesthetics take an even bolder step: they become one, elevating Artemide to new standards of quality.
The “artistic” heart of the entire collection is a 10 cm spherical head capable of 360° movement, thanks to a magnetic connection that separates the mechanics from the power supply. This technology allows the light to be directed as desired, offering maximum flexibility. From this spherical head comes a wide variety of Ixa versions: table lamps, reading lights, floor, wall, and arm lamps, creating a comprehensive range of solutions suitable for any setting. Additionally, the spherical head transforms into a minimalist wall light, maintaining freedom of movement and discreetly blending into the environment. In the cabled version, a circular surface guides the cable along the wall, creating a harmonious interaction between the light and its surrounding space.
Artemide and Foster+Partners developed this collection with environmental impact in mind at every stage of the design process. “Inspired by the dynamic sculptures of Alexander Calder, the design interprets the idea of ‘elegant balance’ through precision engineering,” explained Mike Holland, Head of Industrial Design at Foster+Partners. “Our studio works with artisans and manufacturers to create timeless products that have evolved through an iterative design process. Subtle variations in applied weight and movement inspired the design of the Ixa lamp, offering users a highly personalized analog experience” (Photo: Delfino Sisto Legnani – DSL Studio).
