A Look at Les Rencontres d’Arles 2024

Every summer, photography enthusiasts gather for Les Rencontres d’Arles, the leading festival celebrating this unique expression of the 3rd Art in all its richness. The 55th edition of this major event will be taking place in several of the city’s exhibition spaces from July 1st to September 29th. Under the theme “Beneath the Surface”, this year’s festival features some forty exhibitions, accompanied by screenings, debates, workshops and lectures, to encourage a dialogue between artists and the public and give rise to new reflections and readings.

Among the most eagerly-awaited exhibitions are “Encounters”, Mary Ellen Mark’s first worldwide retrospective, deployed on the first floor of the Espace Van Gogh; “Neither Give Nor Throw Away” by Sophie Calle, Cristina de Middel’s “Journey to the Center”, “Belongings” by Ishiuchi Miyako, winner of the Women in Motion 2024 Kering Prize, and “I am so happy you are here”, by the art institution Aperture. Thanks to its partnerships with LUMA, which presents the exhibition “Judy Chicago: Herstory”, and Louis Roederer, who supports emerging new talent through the Prix Découvertes, the Rencontres d’Arles provide a platform for new talent to flourish one more year.

We had the pleasure of meeting the director of the Rencontres d’Arles, Christophe Wiesner, alongside Martin Parr, Sophie Calle, Marc Donnadieu, Loïck Peyron, Diane Dufour, and Christian Berst.
