In 1991, when Maurizio Cattelan was not yet Maurizio Cattelan, the artist decided to “infiltrate” Arte Fiera, the modern and contemporary art fair that has taken place in Bologna for half a century, with a totally illegal stand. On the occasion of the latest edition of the event, 33 years later, Cattelan returned to the site of the crime thanks to an exhibition project in collaboration with Mutina, a very high profile ceramic company. Because, this is the title of the initiative, brought two works by the Paduan artist into dialogue, Untitled (Zorro) from 1999 and It from 2023, within a monochromatic “theatre” created with Fringe, the Mutina collection designed by Michael Anastassiades. Some have defined Because as “a short circuit between broken rules and complicity”, others as “a tale of rebellion and atonement, of killjoy heroes and radical fragility”. Certainly the project, conceived by Sarah Cosulich, merged art and design, which have always been essential pillars of the Fiorano Modenese company, which in 2017 launched the Mutina for Art program (of which Cosulich is curator), to demonstrate the his commitment to contemporary art, seen as a very fertile ground for exchange and experimentation. Because can be visited by appointment in the spaces of the Mutina headquarters from 26 February to 8 August 2024. By Germano D’Acquisto
