JW Anderson Reinterprets Christiane Kubrick’s Paintings in “Eyes Wide Shut”

For his Autumn-Winter 2024 collection, JW Anderson looks at Christiane Kubrick, Stanley Kubrick’s widow. After seeing “Eyes Wide Shut”, Anderson decided to base his collection on this masterpiece by the American director. He didn’t want to do it in a didactic style, however, so he took a different angle: he chose to narrate Kubrick’s world through Christiane’s works, which are present in the film and frame the movie. And this is where Anderson starts to design his collection, rooted in the Kubrick universe. The velvety red of the curtains colours coats and women’s outfits, the prints of the paintings become all over on long dresses and sweatshirts, and tights land under the boys’ shorts. From vertical fits we move on to softer shapes with cardigans, bomber jackets, trousers and trench coats that leave the body free. For Anderson, this is the second time he has approached the world of cinema, after having worked on the costumes for “Challengers”, the film starring Zendaya that Luca Guadagnino based on the novel “Queer” by William S. Burroughs, and it could be a splendid new beginning where fashion and cinema become increasingly intertwined. Many celebrities came to admire these compositions turning into clothes, including Levante, Andrea Faccio, Kai Isaiah Jamal, to name but a few.
