Venise Nicelli Aeroport x Nilufar Studio: Final Destination, The Airport

Right on the northernmost tip of Lido island, near the San Nicolò area, lies a little jewel of rationalist architecture. We are talking about the Giovanni Nicelli Airport, officially inaugurated in 1953 yet operational since 1926. If its walls could talk, they would certainly have lots of stories to tell, as the beginning of its history coincides with the birth of Italian civil aviation, that is, at the end of the First World War, when neither Rome nor Milan had their own airport. The first passenger to ever take off from the territory did it precisely from here, in 1926, on a flight bound for Vienna. Today, almost a century later, a project to preserve its original lively atmosphere has launched the initiative to transform the airport into a cultural hub, the ideal destination for art lovers. The main hall is currently home to the exhibition “The Ever-Present Future of Design”, curated by Nina Yashar’s Nilufar Gallery. The venue becomes a space for stimulating and intergenerational dialogue between artists and designers, thus contributing to redefining the very future of Nicelli.
