The original building dates back to the twelfth century. Needless to say, the patina of the stonework is awe-inspiring. Completely renovated by architect Jacopo Venerosi Esciolini, this 12-room boutique hotel has become Umbria’s new darling for its travertine pool and fine cuisine. Reconditioned with soothing interior decor and encompassed by a tasteful garden and a vegetable patch, the place seems shielded from any exterior disturbance, although the address is already being passed around. Once divided between decadent palaces and shoddy hotels, Italy is now working on a gradual, inventive revamping of its art of entertaining. This is one of the clearest examples.
