Unprecedented Retrospective in Honour of Joanna Hogg at the Centre Pompidou
After making her debut on English television, Joanna Hogg, 47 years old, eventually made her way to the big screen. In 2007, “Unrelated”, her very first feature film, was released, but it was not until 2010 and 2013, following “Archipelago” and “Exhibition” that her career really took off. Hogg then became a key figure in British cinema. With The Souvenir, a diptych reuniting Tilda Swinton and her daughter Honor Swinton-Birne on screen, Hogg’s work finally got the international recognition it deserved. The masterpiece depicts the complexity of the mother-daughter bond with rare finesse.
The Centre Pompidou has therefore chosen to highlight Hogg’s late work by devoting a unique retrospective to her singular approach to social dynamics within the group. The retrospective opened last Thursday, in the presence of Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, with the premiere screening of Eternal Daughter, Hogg’s latest film produced by Martin Scorsese. A chronological continuation of the previous two films, the movie closes a trilogy that examines the complex relationship between a mother and her children. The retrospective and the release of the film in French theaters will allow French audiences to discover more of Joanna Hogg’s work.
