The Hublot Design Prize Rewards Nigerian designer Nifemi Marcus-Bello’s Ethnological Approach
Founded in 2015 by Jean-Claude River and Pierre Keller on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Big Bang watch, the Hublot Design Prize intends to support a new generation of socially and environmentally committed emerging artists and designers. At the crossroads between design and watchmaking, the laureate will join the illustrious list of previously awarded designers, including Samuel Ross – the British artist who went on to design a watch for Hublot – and last year’s winner, New York-based illustrator Mohammed Iman Fayaz. The seventh edition of the award gathered an impressive jury composed of Co-Director of the Serpentine Galleries Hans-Ulrich Obrist, founder of the Salone Satelitte Marva Griffin, author and critic Alice Rawsthorn and Samuel Ross, the 2019 Prize winner. The jury had to deliberate between 8 young talents, from different backgrounds and nationalities.
At the awards ceremony, which was held on October 31 at the Serpentine Gallery in London, the jury chose to acknowledge the work of Nigerian -born designer Nifemi Marcus-Bello.
Based in Lagos, Nifemi is not a novice in the trade as he already won the Life-Enhancer of the Year in the Wallpaper* Design Awards in 2021. His work, crossing design with his ethnological approach, is meant to create objects responding to the immediate needs of the communities.
