Thom Browne’s grand spectacle at the Opera

Attending a Thom Browne show is always something special. Because at Thom Browne, more than anywhere else, it is mostly impossible to know what to expect. Except to be amazed, probably.

And this season’s show was certainly no exception, as the American designer treated us with… well, an American-style spectacle. Both grandiose and cinematographic, the fashion show – if we can call it that – was mixing up historical and cultural references in front of a very impressive crowd of international journalists and personalities. A joyful spectacle organized in one of the most beautiful places in Paris, the Opéra Garnier and opened with great ceremony by actress Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, rings a bell?)

Dressed with a Louis XVI-style coat, the actress introduced the show with a performance and strolled through the grand foyer of the Opéra, passing in front of Anna Wintour, always faithful to her protégé

The show, which lasted 35 minutes, amazed everyone. The models were dressed in coats made of a rather unusual combination of Renaissance dresses mixed with American sports jerseys, and walked to the rhythm of an equally unusual mash-up of hits.. To give you an idea, we went from Nova Kovach to Grease and Love on a Train by Jon Tye and Jeremy Leahy.

And if Thom Browne is recognized as a full-fledge New York specimen, it is not by chance: the show makes countless references to American pop culture, mixes aesthetics, and dares, a always, to combine dog-bags, grandiloquent hairstyles, ruffles and masculine skirts.

And as a show worthy of the name can only end with a grand finale, actress Michaela Jaé made an appearance aboard a pink Barbie Car..

Janet Jackson, Doja Cat, Amy Fine Collins will be remembering it.
