The young European art scene in the spotlight at the Fondation Cartier
After devoting an exhibition to Latin American art (“Southern Geometries, from Mexico to Patagonia”) last October, the Fondation Cartier for Contemporary Art is now celebrating the young European generation. “Metamorphosis. Art in Europe Now,” on view through June 16, sprung from a one-year quest to discover scenes across various regions, which gave rise to a final selection of 21 artists from 16 countries (after meeting nearly 200 artists in 29 European countries). All the artists were born between 1980 and 1994; for some, this is their first exhibition in an international institution. Emphasizing the diversity of voices and the vitality of exchanges, curator Thomas Delamarre focused on hybrid identities, cultures and modes of expression. The clever mix of artistic practices, from painting to sculpture, film to design, installation to fashion, features such artists as Marion Verboom (France), George Rouy (United Kingdom), Gabriel Abrantes (Portugal) and Tenant of Culture (Netherlands).
