Yolanda Zobel’s intergenerational language at Courrèges
Courrèges has mastered the art of reinventing itself while still remaining true to its roots. This Wednesday, the brand (originally founded by André and Coqueline Courrèges) invited guests to the French Communist Party headquarters for its Autumn-Winter 2019 presentation. In this unusual venue—designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer—Yolanda Zobel, the house’s artistic director since February 2018, presented her second collection in the underground auditorium, which had been transformed into an undulating space. The collection was inspired by André Courrèges’ avant-garde vision and colorful drawings from the early 1970s. This vision was carried out with help from iconoclastic artist Vava Dudu, who collaborated with the brand by creating erotic and playful drawings, while Jeff Mills did the music, and Isabel Lewis did the choreography. In the audience, the Fashion Week regulars were all there, but it was the rising American actress Lachlan Watson who particularly held everyone’s attention.
