In resonance with the retrospective organized at the Grand Palais until February 2, 2015, the Mitterrand gallery presents a new exhibition Niki de Saint Phalle, articulated around his most illustrious characters: The Nanas, from the middle of the 60’s to the end of the 90’s.
Inspired by the rounded body of her then pregnant friend Clarice Rivers, Niki de Saint Phalle created, from 1965 onwards, sculptures of white, black and yellow women in generous shapes, decorated with very colourful decorative motifs (mainly flowers and hearts). Initially made of fabrics and threads mounted on metal carcasses, Nanas will become more and more sophisticated. Their shapes evoke Palaeolithic Venus with small heads without faces and imposing bodies. Sometimes reduced to simple trunks as in the Nana ball (orange) of 1966-67, they are gradually more graceful, regain their legs, thanks to the use of polyester resin which allows more possibilities. An exciting journey to discover until December 20 at the Mitterrand Gallery.
