Marrakech Highlights Contemporary Art from Africa and its Diaspora
Last weekend, Marrakech became a key meeting point for art from Africa and the diaspora with the return of 1-54 Contemporary African Art. Directed by Touria El Glaoui and held at the sumptuous La Mamounia hotel, a masterpiece of Arab-Andalusian architecture nestled in the heart of the medina, this fourth Moroccan edition of the fair brought together an exceptional selection of exhibitors from twelve countries.
Building on the fair’s effervescence, the entire city came alive throughout the weekend with a series of satellite events and showcases, including the special project Between Blues by DaDa Marrakech and the group exhibition The Garden of Encounters in the gardens of Jnane Rumi. Not to mention the eclectic programming of galleries in the Guéliz district, such as Le Comptoir des Mines, L’Imprimerie Régionale and Galerie 38, where visitors could discover the work of artists like Radia Lamrani, Hiba Tahri, Khadija El Abyad, and Ghizlane Agzenaï.
The weekend also offered the opportunity to visit an exhibition by artist Elladj Lincy Deloumeaux at the Musée des Arts et de la Parure, as well as a preview of the work of Moroccan artist Amine El Gotaibi, who opened the doors of his studio to visitors. We crossed paths with Touria El Glaoui, Madison Cox, Cécile Fakhouri, Barthélémy Togo, Amine El Gotaibi, and many others.
