Nina Childress Becomes a Member of the French Academy
The winds of change are blowing through the Académie des Beaux-Arts. The second academician woman in the painting department, Nina Childress celebrated her official investiture on Thursday, June 25th. With her punk background and a fierce commitment to social causes, the French-American painter made a striking impression with her unique academician’s sword, designed by Jean-Luc Verna to resemble a magic wand. The delicate embroidery on her outfit was the result of a collaboration with the participatory design studio About a Worker, which works with the Paris-based women’s aid organisation Maison des femmes. Artist, activist and perhaps a bit of a magician, Nina Childress is currently displaying her work at the Centre Pompidou Metz as part of the Copistes exhibition. She will also be presenting a solo exhibition at the Art: Concept gallery in October, which we are eagerly awaiting.
At the Académie des Beaux-Arts, her investiture brought together Eva Jospin, Thomas Lévy-Lasne, Catherine Meurisse, Floriane de Saint-Pierre and many others.
