Nan Goldin Receives the 2025 Women In Motion Award for Photography
One of the highlights of the 56th Rencontres d’Arles took place last Tuesday, June 8th, at the Théâtre Antique, which hosted a special evening marked by Nan Goldin’s highly anticipated appearance. Artistic company Gratte Ciel kicked off the evening with an impressive aerial performance, before the director of the Rencontres d’Arles, Christoph Wiesner, unveiled the winners of the Book Prize. This year’s photo-text book prize goes to Rosalind Fox Solomon for A Woman I Once Knew, and Katja Petrowskaja receives a special mention for her book La photo me regardait; Rawsht Twana won the Historical Book Prize for Twana’s Box, and Bidi Tomasi received a special mention for his book Al cerchio delle tue mani. Lastly, the Author’s Book Prize went to Vuyo Mabheka for his book Popihuise, and Johny Pitts received a special mention for his book Afropean.
This year, the festival also paid tribute to the late Franco-Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, who passed away last May, through a screening of curated images highlighting the sensitivity and humanist dimension of his work. After this emotional homage, the famous American photographer Nan Goldin took to the stage to receive the 2025 Kering Women In Motion Award for Photography. Honorary guest of the 56th edition of the festival, she proceeded to present her work, accompanied by a screening of her film Memory Lost, with live piano music played by Eliza McCarthy. To round off the evening, Nan Goldin and Édouard Louis returned to the stage for a captivating and thought-provoking discussion.
